Introduction

This mentorship program is offered by the Harvard Business School Club of Singapore (HBSCS), together with Alumni from Harvard University and London School of Economics for students in Singapore.

This program is for highly motivated students who want to broaden their horizons and enrich their experience beyond a purely academic setting. 

Each group will comprise 6 students from different institutions and 2 HBSCS mentors who are experienced professionals across a range of industries.

Students will be required to be committed to the program and be proactive participants who openly share their thoughts and views to help make the mentor-mentee sessions successful.

Q: How many places are there for the 2024 HBSCS mentorship program?

A: There are 12 places for NP students for the 2024 program.

 

Q: Can a non-business related Diploma student join this program?
A: This program is open for all NP students, regardless of the diploma.

Q: How often does the mentorship group meet up?
A: Approximately once a month.

Q: How big is each mentorship group?
A: Each group will comprise 6 Mentees (from different institutions) and 2 Mentors.

Q: Which Institutes of Higher Learning are in the HBSCS Mentorship Program besides Ngee Ann Polytechnic?
A: Besides Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic as well as National Technological University and Singapore Institute of Technology are participants in the Program.

Q: What is the duration of each meetup?
A: Depending on the discussion topics and questions raised by mentees/mentors, a meeting can last between 1 to 2 hours. Sometimes it may be longer or shorter. 

Q: Will members of the group change for every mentorship session?

A: Together with the two mentors, members of each group will remain the same throughout the duration of the mentorship program. 


Q: Where are the meetings held?

A: The mentees and mentors in the group decide on the venue for each meeting, as well as the mode of the meeting (in-person or online).  


Q: What are the topics covered during the mentorship program?

A: Mentees prepare topics for discussion and presentation as agreed among the mentees and mentors beforehand. Some topics from the past had been Definition of Personal Success, Values and Purpose, Sustainability, Business Ethics, Personal Branding, Personal Finance, etc. 

 

Q: Will there be other activities such as workshops and talks to learn new skills?

A: Mentees learn from one another and from the mentors through the sharing of personal and professional experiences. These can take place in the form of group conversations, presentations or group activities.

Q: Will I be missing lessons to attend this program?
A: This program does not serve as a reason to miss any lessons/tests/labs. The meeting schedule is agreed between the mentees and mentors, and meetings typically take place after office hours or during the weekends.

Q: Will this program help me in my University applications?
A: The outcome of this program depends on the composition of your team and mentors. It does not necessarily provide a direct relationship towards University application.

Q: Can this program replace my internships?
A: As this is a voluntary program and does not have any internship arrangements with the companies, it is not a replacement for the internship module. 


Q: How will I know that I have been successful in my application for the mentorship program?

A:  Students successful in the application will be notified through email during the period from 6 to 13 Sep 2024.


Q: How are students selected for the mentorship program?

A: Students will be selected based on submission of all the required items in the application, as well as clarity of their written statements and video presentation.


Q: Where are the mentors from?

A: Mentors for the HBSCS mentorship program can be from Harvard Business School, Alumni of Harvard University as well as London School of Economics. The industry sectors they come from can vary, and in the past, had covered Healthcare, Technology, Finance and Business, to name a few. 


Q: What if I change my mind after being selected for the mentorship program? Can I withdraw?

A: Due to the limited places, students selected for the HBSCS mentorship program are expected to actively commit to and complete the program. Withdrawing from the program halfway would mean depriving another deserving student from the opportunity as we currently do not replace a vacated spot that occurs half-way through the program.  


Q: If I have to start my internship in April next year, would I still be able to apply?

A: Based on past experience, students attending internship towards the end of the mentorship program in April is still workable as the meetings are arranged based on mutual agreement among the team members.
